Weatherization Auditor Earns National Scholarship, Certification in Fire Safety

by admin on February 2, 2010

Anthony Procaccini, Energy Auditor for Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, Inc. Weatherization program, has earned one of only two scholarships in the state of North Carolina from the National Institute of Fire and Safety Training (NIFAST).

The scholarship funds an on-line study course—usually offered for about $600—that is designed to train individuals on how to inspect homes for Fire Safety issues as well as provide recommendation to homeowners on how to correct potentially dangerous situations. NIFAST offered only two scholarships per state for their Fire Inspection Certificate program. Procaccini has since completed the course and passed the certification exam.

The process began with an essay contest held during the last week of November. Participants were asked to explain why the training would benefit them in the workplace. Procaccini’s essay described the importance of the Agency’s Weatherization program, specifically as it relates to health and safety. “We give all homeowners a carbon monoxide detector, a smoke detector, as well as client education brochures that outline the importance of safety with regard to carbon monoxide, space heaters, and combustion appliances,” he further elaborates. “We’re definitely going to save people’s lives.”

Procaccini explained that his essay outlined the Weatherization program’s core values, which are aligned with NIFAST’s goal of reducing the number of fire related injuries and fatalities through homeowner education.

We at NIFAST would like to congratulate Anthony!
