Two students killed in off-campus house fire in Gunnison, Colorado

BELCHERTOWN, Mass., February 1, 2010 — Two students were killed in an off-campus fire in Gunnison, Colorado. According to a press release from Western State College of Colorado, Lucy Causley, 18, of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and Adam Lockard, 21, of Bethesda, Maryland, were killed in the fire.

This is the third fatal fire since January 2 bringing the total number of fatalities to four for the spring semester and for the first time on record there were no fatal fires in the fall semester. Last academic year, 6 people were killed in campus-related fires, which is the lowest on record. Since Campus Firewatch began gathering information in 2000, 139 people have been killed in campus-related fires across the nation with over 84 percent occurring in off-campus housing.

Campus Firewatch monitors the wire services on a daily basis to identify campus-related fire deaths. These incidents include on-campus, off-campus and Greek housing and any death that occurs in these occupancies that are related to student occupancy is included. This is the only source available with this comprehensive level of information that is made publicly available on the Resource page of the Campus Firewatch website at www.campus-firewatch.com under “Current Fire Information.”
