Campus Fire Safety
I was disturbed a few weeks ago to get FEMA’s United States Fire Administration (USFA) report on the causes and characteristics of fires in college and university residential settings. The report : University Housing Fires was estimating an average 3800 fires occur in university dwellings resulting in 50 civilian injuries, and $26 million in property loss on campus residences.
Here are some other interesting facts cited in the article:
• 94% of campuse fires occur in dormitories or dormitory-like residences.
• 6 percent occur in fraternity/sorority houses.
• Peak time for campus fires are during the months of September/October.
• Evening hours between 5 and 10 are the most dangerous, when students prepare snacks or cook meals.
• Cooking fires account for 83 percent of all university housing fires.
Download the USFA report and read the details…not enough information is being disseminated to these students so that they may be properly educated on safe practices. There simply are not enough fire fighters available to disseminate, distribute and educate these students. The time is now for NIFAST programming.
